Check whether Spectrum serves your new address. Not every neighborhood has the same network coverage, so confirming availability early gives you time to plan. This is also a good moment to take stock of your household's Internet habits. Have you added more connected devices? Are more people working or learning from home? Moving is a natural time to reassess your plan.

Two Weeks Out

Contact us to schedule your transfer. You'll need two dates: when service disconnects at your old address and when it activates at the new one. If your schedule allows, a one-to-two-day overlap between the two keeps you connected throughout the move.

One Week Out

Take inventory of your networking equipment. Identify which devices belong to Spectrum and which you own outright. Pack them separately to avoid damage or losing track of your devices.

How to Transfer Internet Service to a New Address

Step 1: Check Availability at Your New Address

Use our online address checker, enter your new street address and you'll see immediately which Internet plans are available. This works whether you're a current Spectrum customer transferring service or setting up at a new address for the first time.

Step 2: Choose Your Plan

Review your current plan and decide whether it still fits your needs. If your household has grown or your usage has changed, a move is a practical time to upgrade. If you're keeping a close eye on the budget after moving expenses, ask about lower-cost options. Qualifying households may be eligible for Spectrum Internet Assist, a low-cost broadband program for those receiving SSI benefits at 65 or older.

Step 3: Schedule the Transfer

Contact us to place the move order. Have your exact move-in date and full new address ready, including any apartment or unit number, since that determines how lines are routed to your space.

Step 4: Review Billing

Your account number typically stays the same after a transfer, but your billing cycle may shift slightly. Ask about any transfer fees, activation costs or credits before you finalize so there are no surprises on your next statement.

Step 5: Pack Your Equipment Carefully

Before unplugging your modem and router, photograph how the cables connect in the back. Those photos will save you real time when setting up in a new, unfamiliar space. Coil ethernet and power cables neatly and secure them before packing.

Setting Up Your Utilities

Your Internet service depends on electricity. If the power isn't on, your router can't broadcast a signal. Aim to have both electricity and Internet activated the day before you move in. That way, your WiFi is running from the moment you arrive, and you can start connecting smart home devices right away. Contact your local power provider at least three weeks in advance to get that timing locked in.

If the previous residents had Spectrum service, the coaxial wiring inside your new home is likely already in place. In that case, the Spectrum Express Connect Kit is usually the fastest path to getting online. You'll connect the coaxial cable to the wall outlet, power up your equipment and follow the on-screen setup prompts through the My Spectrum App, all on your own schedule.

Professional Installation

If you're moving into a newly built home or a property that's never had Internet service, a technician will need to run lines from the street to the house. The same applies if existing wall outlets are damaged, painted over or missing from the rooms where you need them most. A technician can test signal strength, advise on router placement and work through unexpected issues on the spot. Same-day and next-day appointments are available.

Avoiding Downtime During Your Move

The most reliable way to avoid a connectivity gap is to schedule overlapping service: keep Internet active at your old address through moving day and have it activated at your new address the day before you arrive.

If there's a brief window between the two, a mobile hotspot on your smartphone can cover urgent tasks in the meantime.

Common Problems and How to Handle Them

Previous tenant's account is still active. This happens fairly often. Contact us directly to confirm you're the new occupant, so we can disconnect the prior account and activate yours.

Damaged internal wiring. If your modem can't lock onto a signal after setup, the internal wiring may be the culprit. Schedule a service call and a technician can trace the lines, find the problem and run fresh cable to restore your connection.

Older equipment. If your new neighborhood has updated fiber-optic infrastructure, an older modem may not be compatible. Upgrading your equipment means you'll get the full benefit of the speeds available at your new address.
