How To Prevent Buffering

3:00 Minute Read

We’ve all experienced buffering: you’re 20 minutes into the final episode of a series you’ve enjoyed for weeks, and everything freezes. The loading wheel spins and spins while you wait for things to start moving again.

Buffering happens when your device isn’t receiving video data fast enough to stay ahead of your streaming. The good news is that most causes of buffering are simple to fix. Below, we break down why buffering occurs, how it affects your viewing experience and steps you can take to keep your streaming smooth and consistent. You’ll also learn how a reliable connection, like Spectrum Internet®, supports steady performance for households with multiple family members streaming at once.

Common Causes of Buffering

Several factors can slow down your stream, and knowing what to look for is the first step in preventing interruptions. Some of the common causes of buffering are:

  • Insufficient Internet Speed: Streaming high-quality media requires consistent Internet speeds and a reliable connection. If your Internet is too slow, it might not be able to keep up with your stream, leaving you waiting for it to catch up.

  • Network Congestion: Similar to issues caused by low Internet speed, having too many devices on your network can result in a slower connection, especially if you’re streaming on multiple devices. This also applies to streaming services – when their traffic is high, they might not be able to deliver your content as quickly as they normally do.

  • Poor Router Placement: Distance from your router, thick walls or other appliances near your router can cause additional interference, essentially blocking your connection to your router.

Your device can contribute as well. Older smart TVs or streaming devices sometimes struggle with newer video formats or may need updated software to perform their best. Even with a strong connection, outdated hardware may cause video to load more slowly.

How To Prevent Buffering

Depending on the issue causing your stream to buffer, there are several potential solutions to get your show, movie or music back up and running.

Start by checking your speed using the Spectrum Internet Speed Test. If the results are lower than expected or significantly below what your household needs, that may be the cause of frequent buffering.

Router placement also matters. Keeping your router in a central location, avoiding obstructions around it and ensuring your 5GHz WiFi band is available can improve performance. Restarting your modem and router can help clear temporary issues that may slow things down.

If your household has many connected devices, consider pausing large downloads or disconnecting devices that aren’t in use. Homes with gamers, remote workers and multiple streamers benefit from faster plans that offer more room for simultaneous activity.
